Technical Debt in Egarsat’s Reporting

Like many other large corporate groups, Egarsat faces an ongoing struggle with technical debt. A large part of its reporting procedures were completely obsolete: processes running on PowerBuilder, which failed frequently and were extremely difficult to change or extend.

This situation posed a growing risk for Egarsat: every new business requirement for periodic reports meant touching a fragile system, built on a technology that was becoming harder to maintain and increasingly difficult to find skilled profiles for.  

  TechsBCN developed a set of processes running on Azure Synapse Analytics which, through a series of Azure Data Factory pipelines and Azure Databricks subprocesses, ensure that every reporting process is fully orchestrated and simplified.

Failures in generating periodic reports have disappeared, and Egarsat now has much more thorough control over the data its business relies on.

A Modern, Orchestrated Data Architecture

The new architecture replaces the old PowerBuilder processes with a modern data flow: Azure Data Factory orchestrates the ingestion and execution of the different pipelines, while Azure Databricks processes and transforms the necessary data subprocesses before Azure Synapse Analytics centralizes the analytical exploitation of the information.

This shift has made it possible to move from a set of rigid, hard-to-modify processes to a scalable architecture that is easy to extend and maintain over time, aligned with current data engineering standards.

The Result

Thanks to this migration, Egarsat has eliminated the recurring failures in generating its periodic reports and gained much more thorough control over the data its business relies on, significantly reducing the technical debt inherited from its reporting systems.
